Traditional governance, languages, clothing, music, dance, crafts, festivals and ceremonies.

Culture

Traditional Governance

Fondoms, fons, councils of elders and palace institutions are central to community life. Traditional structures differ between communities, and titles or customs should not be assumed to be identical throughout the region.

Culture

Languages

The region contains many indigenous languages alongside English, Cameroon Pidgin English and other languages used in daily life. Communities are the most reliable source of information about their own languages.

Culture

Traditional Clothing

Embroidered garments, colourful patterned fabrics, ceremonial caps, beaded accessories and royal or title-related garments vary by community. Not every North-West outfit should be labelled simply as 'Bamenda traditional wear'.

Music and Dance

Drumming, gongs, flutes, xylophones and related instruments accompany choral traditions, call-and-response singing and ceremonial dance. Social and youth dance groups add contemporary energy to ancient forms.

Festivals and Ceremonies

Annual cultural festivals, palace ceremonies, harvest celebrations, family ceremonies, community development events and diaspora cultural days mark the calendar. Some ceremonies are private, sacred or restricted and should not be photographed without permission.
